Why is my Blender render black? 9 causes and fixes
Updated 2026-10-23
A black or empty render while the viewport looks fine is one of the most common Blender problems. Work through these causes in order; most black renders are one of the first five.
- No active camera. Scene Properties → Camera. If it is empty, select your camera and press Ctrl+Numpad 0.
- Camera points the wrong way or clips the scene. Check the camera's Clip Start/End in Camera Properties; objects outside that range are not rendered.
- Lights are disabled for render. In the Outliner, enable the camera icon (Disable in Renders) filter and check that lights are not switched off.
- Objects or collections hidden from render. The viewport eye and the render camera icon are separate. A collection can also be excluded from the view layer (unchecked box).
- Film → Transparent is on. The background renders transparent and may look black or checkered in some viewers. Render Properties → Film.
- World has no strength. With no lights and a world strength of 0, Cycles renders black.
- Exposure or view transform. Color Management → Exposure set very low makes everything black.
- Wrong view layer or compositor. If the compositor is enabled with nothing connected to the Composite output, you get an empty result.
- Material problems. Emission or volume setups with zero strength, or a material that is fully transparent.
If none of these apply, update your GPU driver, try CPU rendering, and test with a new default scene.
